Talkative Tuesday

December 22nd, 2009 by Jen Hen under The Busy Life, Thrifty Thoughts. No Comments.

Ahhh. Sweet Christmas vacation. This is the first year, EVER, where I have had a break from work and/or school without popping a kid out in 10 years. It is SWEET! Oh yes, for those of you who are unaware, Lil’ C’s birthday was the 20th, and X-man’s birthday is the 27th. Christmas time is a crazy busy time for the Hen house. We are blessed with a lot of family and with that comes a lot of activities around the holidays. Sometimes it feels a little overwhelming trying to figure out how to juggle the kids and all the houses, and other times we just have to make decisions on just how much we can accomplish without stepping on to many toes. At any rate, the kids are spoiled rotten between Christmas and Birthday’s with my family, DH’s family, and their paternal families which are mostly branched in at least two directions as well. X-man makes out like a bandit with about 8 different places to be over the course of two weeks.

I’m looking forward to us having a new, larger, Hen house. My dad’s mother is looking forward to it as well as I have promised to take over the family Christmas meal responsibility. DH and I both really enjoy cooking, and fortunately we each have our “specialities” so when all is said and done we can come up with one really nice spread when we have the space to do it in all at once. Baking is my big thing: sweets, that is. I also love making finger foods. Hubs does exceptional with more elaborate appetizers, and with the meats. Eventually I’m going to broaden my horizons. As Lil’ C gets older I find myself in the kitchen making more.

I was super excited today when I received my Bzz kit in the mail from Bzzagent.com. I’m a “Bzz Agent” and get to try all sorts of items out. In the past I’ve received FULL SIZE “samples” from the Aveeno Naturals Shampoo and Conditioner line, Nivea baby sunblock, Off! mosquito lanterns, BIC Soleil razors, and Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. And that’s only a small list of all of the campaigns I’ve participated in. At any rate, this campaign is focused around L’Oreal Paris’s Lash Boosting Technology. I received the Lash Serum (retail value $14.95) and Double Extend with Lash Boosting Serum in Black (retail value $24.95). I will be participating in the 4 week challenge to see what kind of a change I notice after using the Serum and mascara. Normally I receive coupons to pass along, but I’m afraid I didn’t receive any in this BzzKit. At any rate, I’ll keep you all posted on what I think at the end of the 4 weeks. Until then, you all should go check out the action at www.bzzagent.com and see what kind of campaigns you can participate in. The only catch to all of it is that you Bzz through WOM (that’s bzzagent talk for spreading the word about products through Word of Mouth). That means if you don’t like the product, you can share that opinion with people, or if you love it you can spread the good news to all your friends and coworkers (usually including some really hefty coupons).

Oh yeah! AND! If you become a BzzAgent you get to collect “MyPoints” for participating in surveys, campaigns, etc. (You can check out www.mypoints.com to see what you can use those points for.) Seriously, in the two years I’ve been a member I’ve collected enough points, just by filling out surveys about products I already received for FREE, to get nearly $100 worth of FREE gift cards to my choice of places. Plus, since I like to shop online instead of dealing with the craziness of crowded stores, I get to rack up even more points on purchases I was already making (we’re talking points on purchases at walmart.com, gap.com, oldnavy.com, etc.). It’s seriously worth your time to check it all out. I don’t care how well off you are financially, who isn’t a sucker for FREE stuff?

Donating and Clipping

August 16th, 2009 by Jen Hen under Thrifty Thoughts. No Comments.

The Roost has magnetic blocks all over the living room floor, along with a “cookie jar,” a couple of balls, and a few stuffed animals. Oh… and I have a motorized car sitting on the couch next to me. But that’s okay! Because with all these toys that are laying about I’ve done enough housework to match it all. The Master Roost room closet has been completely cleaned out and reorganized, the laundry is almost entirely washed, dried and put away (except, my DH seems to forget where his pile of laundry belongs). I’ve made a cheery cheesecake at the request of one of our friends who plans to come and do “Quality Control” later, and all the dishes are washed (they are probably dry now too, so I guess I should actually put those away.

I also have the equivalent of two trash bags worth of clothes separated out to donate to our local thrift store, Angels Attic. Angels Attic funds the local community clinic for working  residents of the county who don’t have Health Insurance. It’s a majorly worthy cause and I know this from experience. I have been to the Angel Community Clinic twice myself when my bronchitis flared to proportions I could no longer ignore, but my finances were not permissive of a doctor’s visit, let alone the cost of prescriptions. I’m grateful that we’ve reached a point where we can pay for doctor’s visits, but I will always be thankful that there was a service there for those times in the past.  If you live in Calloway County, Kentucky and you have clothes you can’t wear (or shouldn’t wear) anymore, or you have household items you no longer need, I definitely recommend considering making a donation at Angels Attic.

Now, if only I could convince myself to get out of my lazy “feathers” and put something on I can go to the store in so I can pick up a few things. Hmm. OH! I need to go get the Sunday paper so I can clip coupons! THERE’s my motivation! haha.
